A MESSAGE FROM MR. CORAM
Hello, families!
The 2024-25 school year is well underway! Foremost, I want to thank the many of you that attended HP's curriculum night on Tuesday. The partnership between teachers and families is critically important--even in middle school! As was shared on Tuesday, please follow the QR code links below to get setup on Schoology and Skyward Family Access. These are important tools to keep in touch with how your student is doing at school.

Also occurring this month is Harbour Pointe's celebration of Disability Awareness Month. Throughout October, staff and students at HP learn about Disability Awareness Month and have opportunities to engage in the learning about those in our schools and community that are differently abled. Students have already learned great information during Hawks Path and HPTV--I encourage you to ask your student about what they have learned about different abilities so far and throughout the month!

Thank you for your support of Harbour Pointe Middle School!

Building Positive Habits for Fall
As we settle into the rhythm of the school year, the excitement of a fresh start might be wearing off, and some students may find it harder to stay focused and motivated. Fall is the perfect time to help students develop positive habits that will carry them through the rest of the year and set the foundation for academic success.

Middle school is a time of growth and change, and establishing routines early on helps students manage their responsibilities more effectively. Positive habits not only support academic performance but also contribute to overall mental and emotional well-being.

Key Habits to Focus On:
  1. Time Management: Fall is often when school assignments pick up in intensity. Encourage students to use planners, calendars, or apps to stay on top of homework, projects, and extracurriculars. Learning to break larger tasks into smaller steps helps them avoid last-minute stress.
  2. Healthy Sleep Patterns: With shorter daylight hours and changing routines, it's easy for students to slip into poor sleep habits. Remind them that sleep is essential for concentration, memory, and mood. Encourage students to create a bedtime routine, avoid screen time before bed, and aim for 8-10 hours of sleep.
  3. Staying Organized: Help students understand that being organized reduces anxiety. Encourage them to keep their backpacks, lockers, and workspaces neat. Small habits, like packing their bag the night before and keeping a checklist of what they need, can make mornings easier.
  4. Setting Goals: Help students set specific, realistic goals for the rest of the semester. Whether it's improving their grades, making new friends, or trying a new activity, having clear goals gives students a sense of purpose and direction. Encourage them to revisit these goals regularly and adjust as needed.
Tips for Parents and Caregivers:
  • Create a consistent homework and study routine at home. Have your student pull up their Schoology each night to show you that they are all caught up on their assignments!
  • Encourage balanced screen time with plenty of breaks for outdoor activities and physical exercise.
  • Check in regularly about how students are feeling and listen to any challenges they may be facing.

As always, if you have any concerns about your students wellbeing or how they are adjusting to middle school, don’t hesitate to reach out to their grade level counselor to see how we can partner to ensure your student has a successful year!
