A MESSAGE FROM MR. CORAM
Steve Coram on blue background with blue shirt
Hello, families!
At Harbour Pointe Middle School, we are always looking for ways to recognize students for their positive impact on our school community. Our staff has a multi-tiered approach to student recognition. For example, there are multiple ways students can get recognized on a consistent basis by HP staff. We have Hawk Pride cards that are given out for good deeds at the discretion of staff--these cards can be redeemed for giveaways or entered into drawings for fun prizes. In addition, we have teachers that recognize students in their classes for demonstrating qualities that align to their expectations and/or subject matter. We also have Hawk Pride Assemblies, HPTV, and Hawk Post Cards that happen at different times of the year and are different ways to recognize students.
The next tier to our student recognition is our trimester recognition--the Hawk High Five: Empathy, Willpower, Integrity, Embracing Diversity, and Grit. These success skills are valued at HP and our staff works to emphasize them with our students. Each trimester, teachers can submit nominations for students that demonstrated one or more of the five success skills. Empathy is the ability to understand and be sensitive to the feelings and challenges of others; we do this by placing ourselves in others' shoes. Willpower is the determination to do something or the self-control to stop yourself from doing something that is not in your best interest. Integrity is the quality of being honest and having the courage to stand up for your beliefs and do what is right, even when no one is watching. Embracing Diversity is the ability to recognize, appreciate and embrace the differences in others. Grit is to possess a determined, courageous and "never give up" attitude. Next week, our assistant principal, Sarah Schumacher, and I will be personally visiting classes to present 284 Hawk High Five awards to students! Students that are recognized will receive a certificate and a medallion that represents the success skill they were nominated for.

In addition to the Hawk High Five success skills, we recognize students each trimester for academic success, we refer to this as our “honor roll.” Students who achieve a 3.75GPA or higher will be placed on the honor roll. Student names will be displayed in our great hall showcase. We value all our students at HPMS and attempt to find multiple ways to recognize as many students as possible!

Thank you for your support of Harbour Pointe Middle School!

HPMS PARKING LOT SAFETY
The front parking lot is closed 7:30-8:30AM and 2:30-3:00PM for District Vehicles & Accessibility Permits only
Please read the following important information about our parking lot:
Please remember to not drop off students on Harbour Pointe Blvd. Drop off in the back area of the school or on 50th across from the school and the crossing guard will get your student across the road safely.

If your student is dropped off in the morning at the back entrance to HPMS, please read this IMPORTANT message and look at the picture below.
If you arrive BEFORE 7:35A and you wish to wait with your student…
  • Please pull into a parking space and wait.
  • Please DO NOT line up and wait in our “kiss-n-go” line.
  • Please DO NOT park in the spaces (XXX). The “kiss-n-go” line blocks these parking spaces.
  • When cars line-up before 7:35A, parents who need to drop and go, and staff who need to park and get into the building, cannot do so without passing cars against oncoming traffic.
During the morning drop-off, the “kiss-n-go” line should be moving.

Thank you for helping us keep our HPMS community safe.

OVERVIEW OF HP

UPDATE TO CROSSWALK PROCEDURE
Pink doughnut holding up stop sign in crosswalk
As you may know, for the past several years, we have had staff members serving as flaggers to support the flow of traffic on Harbour Pointe Boulevard at arrival and dismissal and, more importantly, student safety in the crosswalk at that time. Due to a lack of enough trained staff to serve as flaggers, we are going to revert to a model of staff serving as crossing guards. This change BEGAN on Monday, December 2nd.

Staff are now posted at the crosswalk to support students in activating the crosswalk lights, waiting for traffic to stop, and then crossing safely. Staff members in high-visibility gear are posted on either side of Harbour Pointe Boulevard and use the signs paddles to emphasize student crossing.
We need your help as we make this change!
  • If your student walks to and/or from school, please discuss crosswalk safety with them. We will be showing a video on HPTV emphasizing the following: 1) Stop and wait safely on the sidewalk; 2) Activate the crosswalk lights; 3) Follow staff directions and wait for traffic to stop before stepping into the road; and 4) Eyes up! No phones out as you’re crossing the street.
  • If you drop off and pick up your student, please maintain slow speeds in the school zone and be extra watchful for students crossing. Please also allow our buses to enter and exit the parking lot so they can get our students to and from school safely and efficiently.

Hey HP Families!

As we start second trimester, it's an ideal time for students to reflect on their progress and set goals for growth!

Reflecting on Trimester One: Engage your child in discussions about their experiences over the past trimester. Consider questions like:
  • What subjects or activities did you find most engaging?
  • Which accomplishments are you most proud of?
  • What challenges did you encounter, and how did you address them?

Setting Goals for Trimester Two: Based on their reflections, guide your child in setting specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART) goals. For example:
  • Academic Goal: Improve my math grade by completing all homework assignments on time and studying 15 minutes each night.
  • Behavioral Goal: Raise my hand to participate in at least one discussion per week in English class.
  • Personal Goal: Join one after-school club to explore my interests and meet new friends.

Creating an Action Plan: Help your child outline the steps needed to achieve their goals. This may include setting aside dedicated study time, seeking assistance when needed, or engaging in extracurricular activities.

Celebrating Progress: Encourage your child to track their progress and celebrate milestones along the way. Recognizing achievements, no matter how small, boosts motivation and reinforces a growth mindset.

Thank you for your continued support in helping our students thrive. We’re looking forward to a great Trimester Two! Don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.

Absences
If your student is absent, it is important to excuse the absence by doing one of the following:

  1. A written note from the parent/guardian for an excused absence must be received within two school days following a return to school. Administrators may request doctor’s verification for excessive absences.
  2. A phone call from the parent or guardian if a student will be absent. Email HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu or call the 24-hour attendance line at 425-366-5105. When returning from an absence, a student should always get an “Admit to Class” pass from Student Services. Give this pass to your teacher. If the parent phoned in earlier, or if the student brings a signed excuse, the absence is excused. To avoid having the absence recorded as unexcused; students have one additional day after returning to school to bring a signed note from a parent or guardian.
Pre-Arranged Absences
We would like to remind you that for vacation/travel absences, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form must be filled out and returned to Student Services at least one week prior to travel. If you know that your student will be absent, please ask them to get a form from the Student Services office. Your student will need to bring the form to each of their classes for teacher signatures, then collect a parent's signature before returning it to Student Services for administrator consideration.
Early Pick-Up Procedure
Regular attendance is crucial for students' academic success. We encourage families not to schedule appointments during school hours, although we understand that it may be unavoidable at times. If you need to pick up your student early from school, we require some time to retrieve them from their class. Kindly notify us at least ONE DAY PRIOR
by calling (425) 366-5105, or emailing HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu with:
  • Your student's name
  • Date & time of student's pick up
  • Reason for leaving school early
Provided with sufficient advance notice for pick-up, we will have your student waiting for you at Student Services at the specified time, saving you from waiting.

(More information can be found in our handbook online.)

Yellow school bus
Activity Bus Info
  • Students must be a regular bus rider (live within the school bus boundaries)
  • There are two lines of Activity Buses (a NORTH bus and a SOUTH bus).
  • Students need to know their address to get on the correct bus.
  • There are limited stops on the route, so it may not be your child's regular stop but somewhat close in proximity.
  • Students may ask the bus drivers to find out which bus they should take and what stop they should get off.
  • This is NOT your student's regular bus route. Depending on when your student's stop is, they could arrive home after 5:00PM.
  • All Activity Buses leave at 4:10PM from the front of the school.

Deliveries
Items to be delivered to a student during the school day may be placed on the appropriate grade-level shelf located in the vestibule for student pick-up at passing or lunchtime. Please make sure food items arrive in time for a student’s lunch; we cannot guarantee they will have time to eat it otherwise. Staff is not responsible for deliveries or messages unless there is an emergency. Flowers, balloons, and special food treats are not permitted at school due to disruption of learning.
Mustard Abstract Healthy Snacks Inspiration
Snacks
Thanks to the generosity of the PTO, we are able to maintain a stock of snacks for students who need extra nourishment during day. As the school year has gotten started, we have seen more and more students getting snacks. We’re especially seeing our sixth graders getting snacks in the afternoon, probably because their lunch time is so early in the day. If families are able, we encourage them to pack extra snacks for their students so that we can maintain the supply for students in need.

If your family needs assistance with food, clothing, or other basic needs, please reach out to Raylin Lucey, the Student Support Advocate at Harbour Pointe Middle School. You can contact him through the SSA Referral Form or by emailing luceyrj@mukilteo.wednet.edu. He is here to connect you with local resources that may be able to provide support.
