A MESSAGE FROM MR. CORAM

Hello, families!

As we enter into the month of June--and with the end of the school year quickly approaching--I want to again share with you a couple of important tools for checking in on your student's progress at Harbour Pointe Middle School. As a parent of a middle schooler myself, I know that keeping tabs on assignments and tests can be important in catching any end-of-year procrastination.
 
Schoology
Many teachers at HPMS utilize Schoology to communicate with students and families and for keeping everyone up to date on student progress. The Mukilteo School District has a dedicated website to help you get started with Schoology. Don't miss the MSD Schoology Family Access Academy Course that is at the bottom of the website linked above to learn more about Schoology. Believe me, it is time well spent! Also, be sure to download the Schoology app on your iPhone or Android device to get custom notifications on your student's progress.

Family Access Portal
The "Skyward" family access portal is our school district's official student information system. All information about your student is housed in the family access portal--information about grades, attendance, discipline, transportation, and more. Teachers update the grades in this student information system twice a month. If you are not yet signed up on the Skyward family access portal, please visit this website and click on the "Forgot your Username or Password" (see screenshot below). If you are asked for a special identification number to link to your student's Skyward information, please call the school and our office staff will resend the Family Access information.
 
Congratulations on getting your kiddos through another year of middle school -- your students have worked hard and your attention on their progress these last few weeks really do make a difference!

8TH GRADE CLEBRATION

Our 8th grade celebration will be held on Wednesday, June 18th. We have our Recognition Assembly at 11:00 the same day. Families that are attending will need to sign in at the Main Entrance and get a visitor badge. CODING AT HP

Hey Hawks!

Interested in STEM, specifically coding? After school, on June 3rd, there will be an intro to computer science seminar and game sponsored by Kamiak Girls Who Code. It’s not just for girls, but for anyone interested in learning more about computer science. No experience is necessary and snacks will be provided! There also will be a Grand Prize, grab your computer and come check it out in the library, Tuesday June 3rd! There will be a second meeting on June 10th if you can’t make the first one and you’re welcome to attend both. 
 

ATTENTION 25/26 WEB LEADER FAMILIES

Mrs. Zugel and Ms. Rutter have a message for the families of next year’s WEB leaders (current 7th graders):

Due to the first day of school being a day earlier this year, Tuesday, August 26th, is now a district-directed mandatory staff training for all teachers. As a result, we need to reschedule our second WEB Leader training day. The new date for the second training is Thursday, August 28th (same time and location as originally planned).

Please note:

Attendance at both training days is required for students to be eligible to lead 6th grade orientation on the first day of school. These trainings are essential to prepare our WEB Leaders to confidently and successfully welcome our new students.

If this date change presents a conflict or challenge for your student, please let Mrs. Zugel know as soon as possible so we can work together to find a solution.

Kamiak Information

For 8th Grade Families

SPRING/SUMMER TRAINING OPPORTUNITIES

Greetings Kamiak Parents and/or Guardians of Student-Athletes!

The WIAA rules allow for our coaches to work directly with our incoming and returning student-athletes during the Spring/Summer time period: June 2nd-July 31st

Coaches that will be offering optional school and booster sponsored activities will be sending out information soon specific to their programs, but all incoming and current Kamiak student-athletes must have their parent fill out the below Google form to be cleared into the Spring/Summer season for practices, camps, open gyms, contests, open conditioning, etc.

Our Athletic website is also a great place to find out more about our Athletic programs, coaches contact information, and tryout information as we get closer to the next school year.

Attaches is also some additional information and important dates that we’ll be sharing with our incoming 9th graders during our Fall Sport Coaches presentations scheduled this month at OV, HP, and EX, but it is also helpful for all of our returning student-athletes and families.

We’re excited about the important work that will happen this Spring and Summer that will launch us into a great 25-26 school year for Kamiak Athletics.

Absences

If your student is absent, it is important to excuse the absence by doing one of the following: 

  1. A written note from the parent/guardian for an excused absence must be received within two school days following a return to school. Administrators may request doctor’s verification for excessive absences.  
  2. A phone call from the parent or guardian if a student will be absent. Email HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu or call the 24-hour attendance line at 425-366-5105. When returning from an absence, a student should always get an “Admit to Class” pass from Student Services. Give this pass to your teacher. If the parent phoned in earlier, or if the student brings a signed excuse, the absence is excused. To avoid having the absence recorded as unexcused; students have one additional day after returning to school to bring a signed note from a parent or guardian. 

Pre-Arranged Absences

We would like to remind you that for vacation/travel absences, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form must be filled out and returned to Student Services at least one week prior to travel. If you know that your student will be absent, please ask them to get a form from the Student Services office. Your student will need to bring the form to each of their classes for teacher signatures, then collect a parent's signature before returning it to Student Services for administrator consideration. 

Early Pick-Up Procedure

Regular attendance is crucial for students' academic success. We encourage families not to schedule appointments during school hours, although we understand that it may be unavoidable at times. If you need to pick up your student early from school, we require some time to retrieve them from their class. Kindly notify us at least ONE DAY PRIOR
by calling (425) 366-5105, or emailing HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu with:
  • Your student's name
  • Date & time of student's pick up
  • Reason for leaving school early
Provided with sufficient advance notice for pick-up, we will have your student waiting for you at Student Services at the specified time, saving you from waiting.

GOOD TO KNOW

Scent Awareness

Scented products can trigger serious health reactions in people with asthma, bronchitis, migraines, allergies or chemical sensitivities. Please remind your students to maintain a healthy environment for everyone by not spraying scented products while at school.

If your student is participating in clubs, sports, Band, Choir, or Orchestra, they must purchase a $15.00 ASB membership. If you purchased your PE clothes online, please see our Bookkeeper, located in the Great Hall. Yearbooks will be distributed at then end of the school year.

DO YOUR STUDENTS OWE FEES AND FINES?
Please check if your students have fees and fines. There might be charges for lost/damaged books, club fees, or athletic uniforms that were not returned. Any fines and fees carryover from year to year. It’s best to clear these up now. Please click HERE or scan the QR code to check your student’s account.

Activity Bus Info

  • Students must be a regular bus rider (live within the school bus boundaries)
  • There are two lines of Activity Buses (a NORTH bus and a SOUTH bus).
  • Students need to know their address to get on the correct bus.
  • There are limited stops on the route, so it may not be your child's regular stop but somewhat close in proximity.
  • Students may ask the bus drivers to find out which bus they should take and what stop they should get off.
  • This is NOT your student's regular bus route. Depending on when your student's stop is, they could arrive home after 5:00PM.
  • All Activity Buses leave at 4:10PM from the front of the school.

Deliveries

Items to be delivered to a student during the school day may be placed on the appropriate grade-level shelf located in the vestibule for student pick-up at passing or lunchtime. Please make sure food items arrive in time for a student’s lunch; we cannot guarantee they will have time to eat it otherwise. Staff is not responsible for deliveries or messages unless there is an emergency. Flowers, balloons, and special food treats are not permitted at school due to disruption of learning.  

Snacks

Thanks to the generosity of the PTO, we are able to maintain a stock of snacks for students who need extra nourishment during day. As the school year has gotten started, we have seen more and more students getting snacks. We’re especially seeing our sixth graders getting snacks in the afternoon, probably because their lunch time is so early in the day. If families are able, we encourage them to pack extra snacks for their students so that we can maintain the supply for students in need.

You can contact him through the SSA Referral Form or by emailing luceyrj@mukilteo.wednet.edu. He is here to connect you with local resources that may be able to provide support.
