Attendance

School attendance in the State of Washington is compulsory.  (See the “Mukilteo School District Rights and Responsibilities Handbook” for more detail.)  All students enrolled in the Mukilteo School District shall attend punctually and regularly all scheduled classes to which they are assigned unless their absence meets WAC 392-401-020, as below.

If there is an absence, please excuse the absence within 2 school days by doing one of the following:

  • Have the student bring a written note from the parent/guardian to Student Services, or
  • Email the attendance office at HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu, or
  • Call the 24-hour attendance line at 425-366-5105.

The school can excuse absences for the following reasons:

  • Illness, health conditions or medical appointment (including but not limited to, medical, counseling, dental, optometry, pregnancy and in-patient or out-patient treatment for chemical dependency or mental health) for the student or person for whom the student is legally responsible
  • Family emergency including, but not limited to, a death or illness in the family
  • Religious or cultural purpose including observance of a religious or cultural holiday or participation in religious or cultural instruction
  • Court, judicial proceeding, court-ordered activity, or jury service
  • Post-secondary, technical school or apprenticeship program visitation, or scholarship interview
  • State recognized search and rescue activities consistent with RCW 28A.225.055
  • Absence directly related to the student’s homeless or foster care/dependency status
  • Absence related to deployment activities of a parent or legal guardian who is an active-duty member consistent with RCW 28A.705.010
  • Absences due to suspensions, expulsions or emergency expulsions imposed pursuant to chapter 392-400 WAC if the student is not receiving educational services and is not enrolled in qualifying “course of study” activities as defined in WAC 392-121-197
  • Absences due to student safety concerns, including absences related to threats, assaults, or bullying
  • Absences due to the student’s migrant status and
  • An approved activity that is consistent with District policy and is mutually agreed upon by the principal or designee and a parent, guardian or emancipated youth.

If you know about an absence ahead of time, you may request a pre-arranged absence form from Student Services or find it on our school website. We are only able to excuse up to five days per school year; any additional days will be considered unexcused. Students who miss school due to a pre-arranged absence must submit work upon returning to school; additional time to complete work will not be provided for pre-arranged absences.  Projects that were assigned prior to a pre-arranged absence are due on the assigned due date unless specified by the teacher.

When returning from an absence, a student should always get an “Admit to Class” pass from Student Services and give it to their teachers.

Unexcused or Excessive Excused Absences

Attendance at school every day is important. Not only is the learning critical, but so is the social interaction with friends and classmates. Students that miss just two days a month for any reason are more likely to not read at grade level, and more likely to not graduate. We monitor attendance throughout the year and send communications once certain thresholds of unexcused or excused absences are reached. Students who are chronically absent with no valid excused are considered truant and if there is no resolution through other steps, the school will file a petition with the courts.

If you are concerned about your student’s attendance, please reach out to their counselor for support.

Tardies

Students are to be in class when the bell rings, though a teacher may adhere to a stricter policy in their classroom.  Students who do not meet these expectations will be counted as tardy.  Once a student has received three tardies in a trimester, they will be assigned a lunch detention for each subsequent tardy in that same trimester. If a student is having issues getting to class(es) on time on a regular basis, they are encouraged to problem-solve with their teacher, counselor, or other staff member so that they can be on time.

Students arriving at school after 8:05 are considered tardy. Families, please help your student get to school on time.

Tardy arrivals to school will be excused for:

  • Illness
  • Family emergencies
  • Prearranged medical or dental appointments
  • Authorized classroom or school activities

If a student is frequently late to school and they are not excused, the administration will work with families to improve timeliness and if there is no improvement, consequences may be put in place for the student.

Late Arrival/Early Dismissal

Students who leave during the school day must be signed out at the Student Services office by an authorized family member in person or via an email or phone call. Students returning within the same day must sign in to avoid being marked absent for the remainder for that day. Any student who misses more than half the school day may not participate in extra-curricular activities on that day.

Backpacks and Lockers

Most of our students use a backpack to carry their computer, textbooks, and other materials. Students are encouraged to carry only those items immediately needed and keep the rest in their locker. Small rolling backpacks (not suitcase size!) are an option for avoiding strain and injury from carrying a heavy backpack.   Remember that the backpack does need to fit in a locker.  Locker dimensions are: 9” Deep x 8” Wide x 32” Tall.

Students should not leave backpacks unattended or leave them in areas such as hallways or the music practice rooms.

All students are assigned a locker. Lockers are provided for student convenience and are the property of the school.  The school district reserves the right to inspect student lockers at any time.  Students should never tell anyone their locker combination or share lockers. Students should not change lockers without permission from school staff.  The school does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen property.  Only magnetized decorations should be used in lockers, not stickers. Please report any problems with lockers to Student Services.

P.E. lockers are used for P.E. clothing storage.  It is best to have P.E. items in a bag so that items cannot be pulled through the mesh or vents.  Students should check that the lock is secure before leaving the locker area!  The school does not assume responsibility for lost or stolen property from the locker rooms.

Bathroom Use

We want students to be able to use the bathroom as the need arises. To ensure that this is our practice, we need to keep our bathrooms safe and clean. Here are some rules for the bathroom:

  • Use the bathroom for relieving themself, washing hands, and/or briefly checking their appearance. Go, Flush, Wash, Leave!
  • No more than five students in the bathroom at a time.
  • No more than one person in a stall at a time.
  • No repeated, frequent bathroom use during class, Options, or morning Great-Hall time. During those times, only one trip will be allowed, except in case of emergency.
  • Toilet paper and feminine products are to be used only for personal hygiene.
  • If a student sees anyone vandalizing the bathroom or using/selling tobacco, vape products, illegal drugs, and/or alcohol in the bathroom, they should report it to the main office or Student Services immediately.

Violation of these rules will result in disciplinary consequences.

Bus Information

School bus transportation is available to students whose residences qualify them to ride a bus.  All school rules apply at bus stops and on buses.  Failure to maintain safe and expected behavior may result of discipline or exclusion from the bus.  For safety, students should stay behind the yellow line on the sidewalk while the buses are picking up or dropping off students.

Students may not ride a Mukilteo School District bus unless it is their assigned bus, or they have a bus pass.   A bus pass can be obtained from Student Services before school or during lunch if the student would like to ride home with a friend; a note from a parent/guardian is required.  The note must include the date, the student’s name, name of the friend, the bus number, and the bus stop.  Permission must be in writing – absolutely no permission will be taken over the phone.

We also offer an activity bus for students who stay after school for a school-related activity such as a club, sports, drama rehearsal, etc. Students must have a bus pass for the activity bus, or they will not be permitted to ride. The activity bus pass is available from an adult supervising an activity or from the Student Services office. The activity bus runs on a snow route, meaning that a student’s stop may be different than their typical pick-up and drop-off location.

Cell Phones and Other Related Technology (e.g., earbuds and smart watches)

Our school’s base policy is “Off and Away During the Day.” This means that a student’s cell phone should be off or set to silent AND not visible, i.e., stored in a backpack or in a pocket. This is to minimize distractions in the classroom and prevent students from taking photos/video of others without permission.

We do allow students to listen to headphones/earbuds before 8:05 and after 2:45 and during Lunch/Options in the Great Hall, Commons, or on the basketball court. Cell phones must still be stowed away, though.

In the classroom, the default is “Off and Away During the Day.” Teachers may give students permission to use their phone and/or headphones/earbuds for instructional purpose but also may revoke that privilege at any time if it is being abused.

It is the students’ responsibility to know when and where they may or may not have headphones/earbuds in or cell phones out and adhere to those expectations. Failure to do so will result in confiscation of the item(s) for the rest of the day. Chronic issues with technology will result in an adult family member needing to pick up the item OR the student having to turn in any technology items to the office during the day for a period of time.

Students are always able to use the phone in Student Services if a need to talk with a parent/guardian arises; we ask that families do not text students throughout the day and expect them to answer.

Closed Campus

After arriving at school, students are to remain on campus until the end of the school day unless they have school or parent/guardian permission to leave early.  Students are allowed into the building at 7:35 a.m.  Zero period students may enter the building at 7:00 a.m. After school, all students should be off campus no later than 7 minutes after the conclusion of the student day, unless they are participating in a school-sponsored club or sport that has adult supervision.

Any visitors or volunteers during the school day must sign in at the table outside the main office and wear a badge.

Our campus opens to the community, including students who are not participating in a sport or club, at 4:30 pm until dusk, unless there is a sporting or other planned event, which would take priority.

Computer Use

All students are assigned a district-provided computer and charger to use for schoolwork and homework. Students are expected to treat their computer and charger with care and to follow district and school guidelines for computer use. This includes not using the computers for non-school related purposes, not using proxy servers or other tools to get around the district filters and firewall and refraining from searching for or creating inappropriate images or content. Students who misuse their computer privileges in this way may be put on a technology contract, assigned a more restrictive Chromebook, or put on the district’s restrictive filter.

Students who do not take care of their computer and charger, resulting in damage, or who intentionally damage their computer, will be fined for repair or replacement.

Contraband/Prohibited Items

Items that compromise student safety are never allowed at school.  In addition, items that distract students and disrupt the learning environment are not appropriate to have out at school. Some but not all examples of contraband/prohibited items are:

  • Electronics such as cell phones (see section “Cell Phones” above for details), cameras, laser pointers, electronic games, etc.
  • Toys or devices disruptive to the learning environment
  • Flowers and balloons
  • Gang-related clothing, paraphernalia, or drawings
  • Obscene or pornographic materials or drawings
  • Weapons, look-alike weapons, explosives (including fireworks, matches, lighters), air soft or NERF guns, water pistols, or stink bombs/fart spray
  • Tobacco products, alcohol, drugs (including e-cigarettes, vaping products, JUUL products)
  • Sprayable scents (body sprays, cologne, perfume) or antiperspirants – many people are allergic

Contraband/Prohibited items may be confiscated from students and an adult family member may have to come in to claim the item.  In addition to confiscation, another consequence may be imposed for possession of contraband/prohibited items, and law enforcement may be contacted.

Deliveries

Items to be delivered to a student during the school day may be placed on the appropriate grade-level shelf located in the vestibule for student pick-up at passing or lunchtime. Please make sure food items arrive in time for a student’s lunch; we cannot guarantee they will have time to eat it otherwise. Staff are not responsible for deliveries or messages unless there is an emergency.  Flowers, balloons, and special food treats are not permitted at school due to disruption of learning. Uber or DoorDash deliveries are not permitted.

Dress Code

Students should dress casually and comfortably for school, while wearing clothing that is well-suited for a school environment.

Dress Code Requirements:

  • Clothing shall cover private parts and undergarments, or where undergarments typically would appear should the student choose to not wear any (e.g., shoulders).
  • Clothing choices shall not create a health or safety hazard, nor shall they contribute to a hostile or intimidating school environment.
  • No hoods are allowed. If opting to wear a hat or beanie, ears and eyes must always be visible, unless headgear is for specific religious purposes or other special exceptions.

*A violation of the dress code will require a change of clothing. Special circumstances will be considered on a case-by-case basis.

Emergency Drills

Harbour Pointe has a comprehensive, well-organized plan for emergencies.  We practice evacuation and safety drills throughout the year so that if a real emergency occurs, everyone will know what to do and where to go. When we evacuate to the football field, students must exit the building silently and in an orderly manner.  It is important to stay quiet during the entire drill so that everyone can hear instructions.  This is also important during in-building earthquake and intruder drills.

Food Services

Our kitchen staff prepares and serves breakfast and lunch daily.  Breakfast is served from 7:35-8:00 a.m. and includes items like cereal and assorted pastries. At lunch, a variety of foods are offered, including a daily hot lunch special, pizza, hamburgers, sandwiches, and salad. At both meals, an assortment of fruits and vegetables are offered, along with regular and chocolate milk. This year, breakfast and lunch are free for all students. Other items are available for sale à la carte.

Students may pay cash for a second lunch or a la carte items. Students can also deposit a check or cash into their lunch account and access the account with their student ID card.  Additionally, parents/guardians may deposit money into their child’s meal account using a phone/web-based app: https://www.myschoolbucks.com. A student’s ID card is used when paying for school meals.

Hawks Nest

Our Parent-Teacher Organization (PTO) provides a student store, called the Hawks Nest, during lunches. Items like chips, drinks, and cookies are sold. The Hawks Nest is cash only and all proceeds benefit the PTO.

Library

Library Checkout:

  • Students may check out three (3) books at a time for a two-week period.
  • Students may not check out additional books if they have an overdue item.
  • A planner is required at the time of check-out to stamp the due date.

Library Hours:

During open hours, the Harbour Pointe Library is a quiet space for reading, checking out books, individually using student computers, or completing class assignments.

  • Before school: 7:35-8:05; Monday – Friday
  • After school: 2:45-3:50; Monday-Thursday (closed on Friday)
  • Options Time (second half of lunch): Available on Monday and Friday

Lost and Found

If items are lost at school, like water bottles or clothing, they are placed in the Lost and Found cabinet located in the Commons. Higher value items, like phones or instruments, are brought to the Main Office or Student Services. Items left in the gym or P.E. locker rooms are placed in Lost and Found bins in the locker room.  Items with names on them are returned to students, so we encourage you to label clothing with your name.  Each month, all items left in the Lost and Found are donated to a charitable organization.

Lunchtime and Options

Lunch is an important time of the day when students take a break and visit with friends, in addition to eating. To encourage that, we require that all students be seated at a lunch table when in the Commons or at the patio for first 15 minutes of lunch. An area called the Stand Zone if students prefer to stand during that time. At the 15-minutes mark, students should ensure their area is clean and wait at their table to be dismissed for Options. Please utilize the appropriate garbage bins for your trash. During lunchtime and Options all food and drinks (aside from water) must stay in the Commons.

Options for “Options Time” include the basketball court area outside, the Library, the Great Hall, Commons, and, on occasion, the patio outside of the Commons. There are signs that indicate if the outdoor areas and library are open; students should make sure those are posted before going to that area. Students may not go to their lockers or to classrooms at lunchtime or Options.

Some teachers offer a “Lunch Bunch” throughout the year or occasionally request students come during lunch to work or study. To attend, students must have a pass from that teacher and need to stay in that classroom for the duration of lunch and Options.

PE Clothing

Students are expected to suit up for PE every day, meaning that they should be changing into different clothes from what they wear to school. Harbour Pointe PE clothing can be purchased OR students may wear non-HP PE clothing. PE t-shirts must be solid white or navy, and shorts must be solid navy or black. Good athletic shoes with support and shoelaces are required for proper attire. PE clothes must adhere to our school’s dress code policy.  Sweats are optional and recommended in the winter months.  Throughout the year, uniforms can be purchased from the Bookkeeper; PE shirts are $8.00, and shorts are $12.00.  PE clothes should be washed at home at least weekly.

Plagiarism and Academic Dishonesty

Claiming someone else’s work as your own or cheating to improve your score is dishonest. Plagiarism is the practice of taking someone else’s work or ideas and passing them off as one’s own. Academic Dishonesty is defined as any action or intended action that may result in creating an unfair academic advantage for oneself or an unfair academic advantage or disadvantage for any other student.

AI (e.g., ChatGPT, Microsoft CoPilot, etc.) is a technology that we are still learning to use in education. There are many potential positive uses for AI, as well as many potential pitfalls. At this point, any student that uses AI to complete an assignment without specific permission or direction from their teacher to do so will be considered to be plagiarizing.

Students who plagiarize or are academically dishonest may be required to redo the test or assignment and may not receive full credit. They also may receive a school-based consequence, depending on the severity of the incident. In addition, students who provide work for others to copy may receive a consequence.

Report Cards and Grades

Grades for each individual class are available at any time online via the student information system (called “Qmlativ Student Access” and “Qmlativ Family Access” for students and parents/guardians respectively). All secondary teachers in the Mukilteo School District are required to update grades twice per month. Report cards are mailed home for all students at the end of each trimester.

Families are encouraged to contact the individual teacher with any concerns or questions regarding their child’s progress.  Counselors can help facilitate parent-teacher conferences.

Scheduling

Each spring, HP counselors have students complete course requests for the next year. Student schedules are built using these course requests and we do our best to ensure students receive the courses they request. That said, some students may not receive their first or even second choice. Once students are scheduled, we typically do not accept schedule change requests.  Schedule changes, if necessary, are made at the beginning of the year--within the first five days of the school at the beginning of the year.

Students and families are not able to select individual teachers. We believe that all of our teachers provide nurturing and academically rigorous environments for our students. We encourage students and parents to communicate openly with the teachers with whom they are scheduled. If a communication problem arises, we ask that parents schedule a face-to-face meeting with the teacher and include the student. This teaches our students how to effectively communicate and resolve issues, a valuable life skill.

Telephone

There is a student telephone in Student Services.  If a student needs to contact a family member during the school day, this phone may be used. Students may only use this phone before and after school, during passing period, or during lunch, except in case of emergency. Students are discouraged from using the phone for last minute afterschool plans.

Valuables

Do not bring items of value to school.  The school is not responsible for lost, damaged, or stolen valuables. Students are also not allowed to sell or negotiate the sale of items on campus.

Visitors

Students from other schools are not allowed on campus between 7:35 a.m. and 2:45 p.m.; this includes Kamiak students, unless they have prior approval.
