New Role, Same Court: Mariners Try Ref Life for a Day

Four referees in black and white striped shirts stand on a basketball court, with bleachers in the background.
Most athletes dream of sinking the winning shot—but Mariner High School Unified Basketball players Diego Vargas (pictured righ, front middle), an 11th grader, and Kevin Im (pictured front left), a 9th grader, got to try something even rarer: blowing the whistle.

During a January 29 home game against Lake Stevens Unified Basketball, Diego and Kevin traded their jerseys for striped shirts and stepped onto the court as referees for the day.

With no officials available, Snohomish County Basketball Official Assignors Jeff Mattson and Steve Jensen came up with a creative assist. In the days leading up to the game, they taught Diego and Kevin the basics of officiating, then teamed up with them on the court to help referee the game.

Coach Kerry Hufford called it a win-win. “We thought it was a great idea, a valuable experience for our kids, and a great way to partner with our officials association,” he said.

For Mattson, the moment was a season highlight. “Watching them run up and down the court in striped shirts with whistles—and huge smiles on their faces—was so much fun,” he said.

Hufford agreed, adding, “Diego and Kevin had a blast, and spectators loved it. Moments like these show the magic of Unified Sports—when sport and togetherness shine in their purest form.”

As for Diego, the experience may have sparked a new dream. “I had a lot of fun and I’d like to be a referee someday,” he said. “If you can be a referee, then you can be anything in life if you just put your mind to it.”
