A MESSAGE FROM MR. CORAM

Hello Families!

We've had an outstanding start to the school year at Harbour Pointe! Our students have returned ready to learn, connect, and make positive contributions to our school community. Thank you to our families for helping set the stage for a successful year
  
One thing you'll hear a lot about this year is our Hawk Pride Card recognition system. Staff members are working hard to recognize students when they demonstrate our Core 4 expectations: Respectful, Responsible, Safe, and Inclusive.
 
Students earn Hawk Pride Cards throughout the school day and can exchange them for rewards at various times during the year. We're excited to introduce a new opportunity this year called the Hawk Pride Hub, which will be open during lunches twice each week, with our first lunch exchange taking place on Thursday, September 10.

The Hawk Pride Hub will offer a variety of fun items for students to exchange their cards for, including things like Pokémon cards, small trinkets, school supplies, and individually wrapped treats.
  
We'd love your help keeping the Hawk Pride Hub stocked! If your family would like to donate:
  • Small trinkets or prizes
  • Trading cards
  • Individually wrapped treats (with ingredient labels on the package)
Please bring donations to me in the main office.
  
Our goal is simple: when students are excited about earning and exchanging Hawk Pride Cards, they're more motivated to demonstrate the Core 4 behaviors that make Harbour Pointe a positive and welcoming place for everyone.
 
On a more logistical note: thank you to everyone for your patience as we work through our beginning-of-the-year traffic routines.
  
Please remember that student drop-off and pick-up should be accessed through the back driveway near the fire station. To help keep traffic moving safely and efficiently, please do not make three-point turns on the narrow back drive.

While the line may seem long at times, it moves much more quickly once families and students settle into their routines. In the morning, we ask families to treat drop-off as a "kiss-and-go" process. Having students ready to exit the vehicle as you approach the drop-off area helps keep traffic flowing and reduces wait times for everyone.

HPMS PARKING LOT SAFETY

Please read the following important information about our parking lot:

The front parking lot is closed 7:30am-8:00am and 2:30pm-3:00pm for buses only

Please remember to not drop off students on Harbour Pointe Blvd. Drop off in the back area of the school or on 50th across from the school and the flagger will get your student across the road safely.

If your student is dropped off in the morning at the back entrance to HPMS, please read this IMPORTANT message.
If you arrive BEFORE 7:35A and you wish to wait with your student…
  • Please pull into a parking space and wait.
  • Please DO NOT line up and wait in our “kiss-n-go” line.
  • Please DO NOT park in the spaces (XXX). The “kiss-n-go” line blocks these parking spaces.
  • When cars line-up before 7:35A, parents who need to drop and go, and staff who need to park and get into the building, cannot do so without passing cars against oncoming traffic.
During the morning drop-off, the “kiss-n-go” line should be moving.

DELIVERIES FOR STUDENTS

Items to be delivered to a student during the school day may be placed on the appropriate grade-level shelf located inside the Main Entrance for student pick-up at passing or lunchtime. Please make sure food items arrive in time for a student’s lunch; we cannot guarantee they will have time to eat it otherwise. 

Staff is not responsible for deliveries or messages unless there is an emergency. Flowers, balloons, and special food treats are not permitted at school due to disruption of learning.

Picture Re-take/ Make Up Day is October 9

Ordering will open on September 18.

If you would like a retake, you will need to bring in your already purchased picture packet that you do not want on October 9. The photographers will take them. 

There will be no retake for students' IDs.

  • Register online — go to the HP school website and click on “Athletics” and complete the online registration in Final Forms (parent & student portions)
  • Sports Physical — Submit a sports physical (good for 2 years)
  • ASB — Purchase an ASB membership ($15)

RESOURCE ASSISTANCE

Bright Start Clothing Support

Bright Start offers new school clothing and shoes for students who qualify based on financial need. Clothing may be provided through an in-person shopping experience or a prepared clothing bag. If you are interested in this resource for your student, please complete the SSA Referral Form below, and we will follow up with more information.

Mr. Lucey helps students and families connect with resources such as food, clothing, housing, bill assistance, mental health support, health insurance, documentation, and more. He is also available as a safe person to talk with and to help connect families to community supports.

Attendance

Attendance is an important factor in your child’s success in their education journey! That said, we are aware that sometimes it is unavoidable to miss school. While there are many reasons students may be absent, there is only ONE thing you need to do when it happens:

Please be sure to contact the attendance office by phone or email, 24hrs a day to report your student’s absence. Include your child’s name, grade, and reason for missing school. 425.366.5105, or HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu

If you know in advance that your student will be absent for one day or more, please complete the prearranged absence form at this LINK, or find it in another language on the district website. Be sure to choose the middle school option from the list of choices.

Absences

If your student is absent, it is important to excuse the absence by doing one of the following: 

  1. A written note from the parent/guardian for an excused absence must be received within two school days following a return to school. Administrators may request doctor’s verification for excessive absences.  
  2. A phone call from the parent or guardian if a student will be absent. Email HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu or call the 24-hour attendance line at 425-366-5105. When returning from an absence, a student should always get an “Admit to Class” pass from Student Services. Give this pass to your teacher. If the parent phoned in earlier, or if the student brings a signed excuse, the absence is excused. To avoid having the absence recorded as unexcused; students have one additional day after returning to school to bring a signed note from a parent or guardian. 

Pre-Arranged Absences

We would like to remind you that for vacation/travel absences, a Pre-Arranged Absence Form must be filled out and returned to Student Services at least one week prior to travel. If you know that your student will be absent, please ask them to get a form from the Student Services office. Your student will need to bring the form to each of their classes for teacher signatures, then collect a parent's signature before returning it to Student Services for administrator consideration. 

Early Pick-Up Procedure

Regular attendance is crucial for students' academic success. We encourage families not to schedule appointments during school hours, although we understand that it may be unavoidable at times. If you need to pick up your student early from school, we require some time to retrieve them from their class. Kindly notify us at least ONE DAY PRIOR by calling (425) 366-5105, or emailing HPAttendance@mukilteo.wednet.edu with:
  • Your student's name
  • Date & time of student's pick up
  • Reason for leaving school early
Provided with sufficient advance notice for pick-up, we will have your student waiting for you at Student Services at the specified time, saving you from waiting.

GOOD TO KNOW

Scent Awareness

Scented products can trigger serious health reactions in people with asthma, bronchitis, migraines, allergies or chemical sensitivities. Please remind your students to maintain a healthy environment for everyone by not spraying scented products while at school.

If your student is participating in clubs, sports, Band, Choir, or Orchestra, they must purchase a $15.00 ASB membership. If you purchased your PE clothes online, please see our Bookkeeper, located in the Great Hall. Yearbooks will be distributed at then end of the school year.

DO YOUR STUDENTS OWE FEES AND FINES?
Please check if your students have fees and fines. There might be charges for lost/damaged books, club fees, or athletic uniforms that were not returned. Any fines and fees carryover from year to year. It’s best to clear these up now. Please click HERE or scan the QR code to check your student’s account.

Activity Bus Info

Look for an announcement in the newsletter letting you know when the Activity Bus will start!
  • Students must be a regular bus rider (live within the school bus boundaries)
  • There is one Activity Bus.
  • Students need to know their address.
  • There are limited stops on the route, so it may not be your child's regular stop but somewhat close in proximity, although they may have to walk a bit more to their home.
  • Students may ask the bus drivers to find out which bus they should take and what stop they should get off.
  • This is NOT your student's regular bus route. Depending on when your student's stop is, they could arrive home after 5:00PM.
  • The Activity Bus will leave at 4:10PM from the front of the school.

Snacks

Thanks to the generosity of the PTO, we are able to maintain a stock of snacks for students who need extra nourishment during day. As the school year has gotten started, we have seen more and more students getting snacks. We’re especially seeing our sixth graders getting snacks in the afternoon, probably because their lunch time is so early in the day. If families are able, we encourage them to pack extra snacks for their students so that we can maintain the supply for students in need.

If your family needs assistance with food, clothing, or other basic needs, please reach out to Raylin Lucey, the Student Support Advocate at Harbour Pointe Middle School.
